HI all, we aim to base ourselves in Mapleton and do a few sections of the Walk over 3 days, car shuttling for the through walks. 2 I have chosen so far are: Baroon Pocket Dam - Kondalilla National Park day-use area, then Flaxton Camp → Mapleton National Park (M4: Delicia Road entrance). I’d appreciate any suggestions for our 3rd day please? which section do you think is best? happy for a through walk or out and back is fine too. Thanks in advance
Lisa
Hi Lisa. I’d recommend the Gheerulla Circuit. You can park on Delicia Rd south of Gheerulla Falls and walk past the falls, down the valley (don’t climb up to Ubajee camp) then climb up to Thilba Thalba lookout and head back along the top to return to your car. Some nice spots for a dip in the creek in the valley if you like that and nice views after climbing up. See here for a description: Gheerulla Valley Circuit - Aussie Bushwalking
Hi and thanks for the response.. is it possible to reduce the length of this walk a little by starting and ending at Sam Kelly road/Gheerulla camping area, instead of Delica? I don’t know what that road would be like for access
Regards
Lisa
If you park on Delicia Rd south of the falls then you’re right on the track. The Sam Kelly Rd is a little off the circuit so it’d be a bit more distance. It’s not an actual carpark, but there’s plenty of space on the side of the road there. Otherwise your only option is to just do part of the circuit or I guess you could car shuffle to Sam Kelly Rd and just choose to do half the circuit.
A nice option to make the walk a bit shorter and without sustained uphills while also having a shorter car shuffle could be to park one car on Delicia Rd South of Gheerulla Falls like Richard has suggested. But instead of parking your other car at sam kelly rd you park your other car further down Delicia Rd where a gated fire trail leads down to Thilba Thalba walkers camp (just make sure not to block the gate as this is the emergency access route for the camp). Doing this you could start high seeing the view from the Thilba Thalba camp and the viewpoint before winding down to the valley and then making your way up the valley to Gheerulla Falls and then a short walk to your other car. This would save you about ~7.3kms of walking making your day ~13.9km rather than 21.2kms and be quite a quick and painless car shuffle from your accomodation.
